A community mourns as they come to terms with an unimaginable tragedy. A somber gathering of hundreds came together to pay their respects to Masrob Ali, a taxi driver whose life was tragically cut short in a head-on collision in Bolton, Greater Manchester. The accident, which occurred in the early hours of a Sunday morning on Wigan Road, also claimed the lives of three teenagers.
Family and friends converged at the Momineen mosque in Blackburn, Lancashire, the hometown of the Uber driver, to honor his memory. Among the mourners was his nephew, Shahid Ali, who shared heartfelt words with BBC North West Tonight. He described his uncle as 'one of the best people I met and lived with,' emphasizing his exceptional character. Shahid Ali further elaborated on his uncle's nature, stating, 'He never got involved with any kind of trouble or anything, he never had any bad word for anyone and no-one had a bad word for him, and that's the reason so many people loved him.'
But here's where it gets controversial... The collision also resulted in the deaths of teenagers Muhammad Danyaal Asghar Ali, 19, Farhan Patel, 18, and Mohammed Jibrael Mukhtar, also 18, who were in a Seat car that collided with Ali's taxi. Additionally, five passengers sustained injuries, and the police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Shahid Ali recounted their shared history, saying, 'From a young age we used to live just across the street from each other. We grew up together, went to school together, in our younger days we spent evenings, afternoons, weekends together, cycling and playing football.' He added, 'Then we worked together and did business together, so he was with me basically all my life.' He portrayed his uncle as a man of quiet demeanor, dedicated to his work and committed to supporting his family. He poignantly stated, 'He was trying to help his young family and this is what happens, early in the morning and we cannot take it back but Allah will give him a better place.'
Masrob Ali had dedicated 10 years of his life to working as a taxi driver, as his family previously noted. A representative from Uber expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event, stating, 'Everyone at Uber is deeply saddened to hear of this tragic incident and our hearts go out to everyone impacted. Mr. Ali was an important part of the Uber community and our thoughts and sincerest condolences are with Mr Ali's family at this incredibly difficult time.'
And this is the part most people miss... The outpouring of grief highlights the impact of this tragedy on the community. The loss of life, including both the experienced driver and the young lives, is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community support during times of sorrow. The investigation will hopefully shed light on the exact cause of the accident, but the pain of the loss will undoubtedly linger.
