Former Rockies Manager and GM Find New Roles in Baseball
The Colorado Rockies have undergone a significant shake-up in their baseball operations over the past few months, but the two key figures at the helm during the team's decline in the Major League Baseball (MLB) rankings have found new opportunities elsewhere in the sport.
Former general manager Bill Schmidt and ex-manager Bud Black have recently taken on new roles with the Oakland Athletics and the San Diego Padres, respectively. For Black, this move marks a return to the club he managed for nine seasons (2007-2015) before taking over the Rockies in 2017.
Black is rejoining the Padres as a senior advisor of baseball operations, a position that allows him to continue his involvement in the sport while potentially exploring a return to the dugout as a manager in the future. Despite his dismissal from the Rockies in May after a disappointing 7-33 start, Black remains interested in managing again.
The news of Schmidt's move to the Athletics, where he will take on a scouting role, was first reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Schmidt's transition back to scouting is significant, as it represents a return to the job he held earlier in his career before rising through the ranks of the Rockies over the past quarter-century. He initially took on the general manager position in 2021, first on an interim basis after the departure of Jeff Bridich, and later with the 'interim' tag removed.
The Rockies organization dismissed Schmidt shortly after their 43-119 season, marking a challenging period for the team.
This strategic shift in the Rockies' front office comes as the team looks to rebuild and improve its performance in the MLB. Both Black and Schmidt's new roles demonstrate the potential for former Rockies leaders to find success and contribute to other MLB teams' success.
